What Makes This Concert Interesting
• Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte was inspired by a Haydn string quartet. Shaw uses that older musical form as a starting point, then lets the music move in colorful and unexpected directions.
• In 1974, scientists sent a message into space from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s Primal Message turns that signal into music, using numbers and patterns to explore connection.
• Dvořák began the New World Symphony while living in New York, but he worked on much of it during a summer in Spillville, Iowa, a small town with a large Czech community.
