About this event
The rising of Makaliʻi (the Pleiades constellation) marks the start of the Hawaiian New Year, known as Makahiki, which honors Lono, the akua (Hawaiian god) associated with peace, agriculture, and fertility. Traditionally, this season was a time of harvest, rest, celebration, and friendly competition, when communities came together to give thanks, strengthen relationships, and honor the abundance of the ʻāina (land). Today, Makahiki continues to remind us of the importance of community, gratitude, and caring for the ʻāina.
In the spirit of Makahiki, the Native Hawaiian Employee Resource Group and Hui o Moananuiākea (Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islanders Club), invites YOU to join us at our annual Lonoikamakahiki Pāʻina at the Glover Alston Intercultural Center (GAIC), on Monday, November 2nd, from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Come and enjoy some ʻono (delicious) food as we serve some of Hawaiʻiʻs favorite dishes and hula performances featuring students of Hui o Moananuiākeaʻs Papa Hula.
Here at Whitman, we celebrate this sacred time in the context of our diaspora and as guests on this land.
We hope you can join us in this evening of connection and celebration
To help us prepare properly, we ask that you please RSVP by Friday, October 30th.
