- ➤ The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center is hosting free Black History Month events with presentations & meals each Friday from noon to 1 p.m., starting today at the chapel building in building T7 at 77 Wainwright Drive; a virtual option is available. Union-Bulletin
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Friday evening, Wolfling Coffee in Waitsburg hosted the Mythical/Movable Bluegrass Jam with over fifteen musicians and a lively crowd, and the venue will host the event monthly offering coffee, teas and housemade baked goods. Waitsburg Times
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ College Place School District named Jodi Grove principal of Davis Elementary after Principal Mark Ferraro announced his retirement; Grove, who served as assistant principal since 2023, was appointed at a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 3 (she will start on July 1). Union-Bulletin
- ➤ State Sen. Perry Dozier introduced two bills to help school districts in financial distress (a Prescott School District graduate) that passed their legislative committee this week. One bill would let districts borrow from transportation funds to stabilize budgets while the other mandates early intervention and training for school directors. Union-Bulletin
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Measurements at Milk Shakes on the edge of the Mill Creek Watershed show the Blue Mountains hold just 42% of a normal snowpack, officials say. Warmer winter rain is reducing water storage, which may leave less water for local fish & farms this summer. Union-Bulletin
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Blue Mountain Heart to Heart received $1m from a congressionally directed appropriation to convert a 14,000 sqft warehouse (at 3 W. Poplar) into a treatment facility offering clinical and social services. The nonprofit and city are finalizing plans, with bidding set to be announced by mid-March. Waitsburg Times

- ➤ U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner honored the 1984 girls basketball state champions on the House floor Wednesday, Feb. 4, and the team will finally receive its trophy Saturday, Feb. 7, after 42 years without one. The local ceremony recognizes a historic moment for the team. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ Sydney Smith, a Waitsburg third grader on the Walla Walla Swim Team, competed in the Cougar Winter Open at Gibb Pool on Jan. 31 — Feb. 1, winning all 10 events; after her birthday on Feb. 9, she will move up to the 9-10 age group. Waitsburg Times
