- ➤ Returning from Tuscany, Tom and Judy Bennett will close American 35 on March 30 and open Fiasco on May 1—pending final permitting and furniture delivery—to continue serving Neapolitan pizza in Walla Walla. Waitsburg Times
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A woman from Richland was arrested on Saturday, March 22 after allegedly abandoning six dogs in an empty house in Burbank where no food or water was provided for at least six days—two pit bulls died and she now faces felony charges for the deaths and misdemeanor charges for the four surviving dogs, with her court arraignment set for April 7. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On March 11, twenty-seven Waitsburg FFA members competed in Pomeroy where Cedar Stegall placed second in Prepared Public Speaking, Hannah Peralez finished third in Extemporaneous Public Speaking, and the sophomore parliamentary procedure team also placed second. Finalists joined district events on March 26 and the Ag Mechanics team placed fifth in Garfield-Palouse on March 20 — FFA advisor Nicole Abel said the team improved each contest. Waitsburg Times
- ➤ Ben Gauyan, a 30-year veteran educator, was picked as the new superintendent of Walla Walla Public Schools by the board on March 27—he will start his position on Tuesday, July 1—bringing his experience from Stanwood-Camano School District to the community. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ Three finalists for Walla Walla Public Schools superintendent—Patricia Rodriguez, Ben Gauyan and Mark Wenzel—met with community members on March 27 at the school district office on 364 S. Park St to answer questions about enrollment issues and classroom quality. Rodriguez stressed transparent spending and strong teacher support while Gauyan and Wenzel emphasized inclusion and community engagement. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ Waitsburg Elementary honored students with PRIDE awards on Monday, March 24 during an assembly that announced American Heart Association fundraiser results and featured a fun Silly String war with staff—lifting spirits among students. Waitsburg Times

- ➤ At a city council meeting on March 19th, Waitsburg officials voted to let the group hold their Memorial Day event after concerns over past damage and drugs and accepted David Seidl’s $130,000 bid for the former city hall building with Chet Childers’ offer as backup.
