EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students seeking an associate degree, certificate, or apprenticeship can apply for the Career and Technical Scholarship offered by Washington State Opportunity Scholarship, which awards $1,500 per academic quarter and automatically considers applicants for the Rural Jobs Initiative that provides up to $8,000 to rural students—applications must be submitted by 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 15.  Union-Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Senate Bill 5284, if passed, will shift recycling costs from taxpayers to companies—supporters believe it will lead to better packaging and less waste, while critics worry that higher business costs could follow. Local residents are encouraged to share their input with representatives as the state reviews its recycling program.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Walla Walla County Fire District No. 4 received a $2,500 grant from AGWest Farm Credit on April 1 to help buy a new portable, battery-powered fan that clears smoke and toxins from burning buildings. Chief John Golden said the lighter fan is safer than the old gas-powered model—improving visibility and response during fires.  Union-Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Washington consumers are asked to check their freezers for recalled Lean Cuisine and Stouffer's frozen meals that may contain wood parts. The recalled items include Butternut Squash Ravioli, Spinach Artichoke Ravioli, Lemon Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry and Party Size Chicken Lasagna produced from August 2024 to March 2025; these products should be returned to the retailer for a refund or replacement.  KONA
