ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two 19-year-olds escaped serious injury in a high-speed crash near Finley late Tuesday night when a car hit a power pole—causing it to flip—and Benton PUD crews secured a temporary fix while further repairs are planned for Wednesday.  KONA

CRIME NEWS

  • In a 2021 assault case from Walla Walla, the defendant accused of organizing the attack died in January—while among the six charged one had charges dismissed and two accepted plea offers—and the remaining two face trials on April 28 and Aug. 18.  Union-Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Washington can apply for an instant e-bike rebate of $300 or $1,200 through the WSDOT WE-Bike Program, with applications closing at noon on April 23; applicants must meet income requirements for the larger rebate and use the funds within 45 days or by June 30 + the program aims to boost e-bike use for work and school.  KONA
  • Walla Walla is accepting applications for amendments to its Comprehensive Plan until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 1. Residents can join pre-application meetings at 2 and 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and will receive final decisions in spring 2026 — suggestions may include changes to zoning or land use designations.  Union-Bulletin
  • Old City Hall at 147 Main St. in Waitsburg was sold on April 7 for $130,000, and after fees the city will net about $121,000 to help pay for flood-control work and an ADA restroom trailer. Burbank resident Chet Childers bought the historic building—built in 1889 and listed on the National Register—and will work with a company to study redevelopment for commercial and hotel or residential uses, though it will need nearly $1.6M in remodels.  Union-Bulletin
  • College Place Police Chief Troy Tomaras named Capt. Kris Schweigert as his new second-in-command; he was sworn in on April 8 and brings 34 years of law enforcement experience. Schweigert joins a department that now has 18 officers—this change comes as the city’s growth pushes the police force to expand.  Union-Bulletin

  • A pet advice article explains that pet owners riding with dogs or cats in Washington and Oregon must secure their animals in the vehicle and take regular breaks. It warns that leaving pets unattended may lead to police action — and possible animal cruelty charges.  KONA
