- ➤ Sherwood Trust, a local nonprofit, is providing $250,000 in grants for 501c3 nonprofits that offer pro bono legal aid to low-income immigrants. Eligible groups in Walla Walla County, Columbia County or Milton-Freewater have until 6 p.m. on April 30 to apply—award amounts and the number of grants will be decided later. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ The Easter Bunny will hide treat-filled eggs across the valley ahead of Easter Sunday April 20. Egg hunts are planned on April 18 at Wheatland Village, College Place and Touchet + on April 19 at Pioneer Park at 9 a.m., Milton-Freewater at 9 a.m., Waitsburg at 10 a.m. and Weston at 10 a.m. + Families are invited to bring baskets to these free events. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Walla Walla middle school students' art is being shown at a regional exhibit at the ESD 123 building in Pasco — 43 of the more than 170 pieces are by local students — and the display will run through May 1. An opening reception will be held on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. with students, family and art teachers present. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ On Saturday, April 12, middle school students competed at Walla Walla Community College and five finalists were chosen from over 50 essays to represent the city at the Washington State Civics Bee Finals in Olympia. George Rodegerdts won first place, receiving a trophy, a $500 check, and a tablet (other finalists were awarded certificates, tablets, or cash prizes) as reported by local organizers. - ➤ Walla Walla County filled a leadership gap by hiring Joel Dickerson as the new county engineer to manage all road projects. Dickerson— a licensed civil engineer with local roots and experience in California—will begin his role on April 23 during a trial period. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ East Alder Street between McCabe and Bridge streets near Edison Elementary will close from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for repair work on a water service leak (residents and pedestrians will have access although emergency vehicles will not), as announced by the city. Union-Bulletin
