ECONOMY NEWS

  • Washington shoppers will soon see a rise in canned goods prices as tariffs go into effect, which is expected to increase costs for 14 staple items. Consumers may want to consider stocking up before price hikes affect their grocery bills — a change that will worsen over the next few months.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early results from Tuesday's special election showed the proposed Waitsburg School District capital levy trailed with 152 yes votes to 196 no votes as voters decided on the plan to collect 80 cents per $1,000 for school improvements. A proposal to form a regional fire authority—combining fire districts 1, 3 and 7—led with 49 yes votes to 14 no votes, and counting will continue until May 2.  Union-Bulletin
  • Voters are casting ballots today before 8 p.m. in a special election that asks communities to choose new school levies, to merge fire districts in Walla Walla, and to upgrade Yakima's emergency radio system—each measure may change tax rates and boost public safety.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Longtime sports official Vic Walker was honored at a City Council meeting earlier this week with a Mayor’s Community Service Award and a proclamation establishing Friday, April 25 as Vic Walker Day—recognizing his 59 years of officiating over 8,000 contests in Walla Walla.
