- ➤ State officials approved the Chevron station at 7 E. Rose St.—owned by Ben Kleban of Stillwater Holdings LLC—to continue selling gasoline after reviewing its pollution liability insurance in late February. Cleanup work is ongoing with groundwater treatment and planned removal of storage tanks while Ecology seeks $3.5 million in state funds. Union-Bulletin

- ➤ Spring Release Weekend returns to the Walla Walla Valley to kick off wine season as wineries will host events from May 1 to 4. Wineries such as Figgins, Abeja, Dunham Cellars, Woodward Canyon and Reininger will offer tastings, music and food—nearly 5,000 visitors are expected to attend. Union-Bulletin

- ➤ An appellate court ruled on April 21 that the City Council violated the Open Public Meetings Act during its special meeting on November 18, 2022, when it selected a finalist for city manager. The case will go back to the trial court to decide if the council knowingly broke the law — the city has 30 days to appeal while it reviews its legal options. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ Starting May 7, 2025, Washington air travelers 18 and older must show a REAL ID-compliant license or other accepted photo ID to board commercial flights—officials warn that those with noncompliant IDs may face long delays. Residents are advised to schedule a DMV appointment now to update their identification. KONA
- ➤ The Port of Walla Walla awarded four tourism grants to local groups hosting events in the county — including the Chamber Music Festival, Blue Mountain Land Trust, RG Entertainment, and the Washington State High School Rodeo Association. - ➤ Howard Street will be closed from Juniper Street to Bryant Avenue starting Monday, April 28 as the city begins a full roadway and utility replacement project that will run through September. City workers will install a new roundabout, improved sidewalks with ADA ramps and marked crosswalks (the project is estimated to cost $4 million and is funded by water and sewer rates plus a Transportation Improvement Board grant). - ➤ Walla Walla County Department of Community Health is accepting applications for local groups to share $600,000 from opioid settlement funds to support projects that fight the opioid crisis. The department held a meeting on April 22 to explain that projects must have clear plans, and groups have until 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 to apply—awards are expected to be announced in early June.
