- ➤ Walla Walla officials worry the Head Start program’s future may be at risk as layoffs and delayed federal reimbursements have slowed the contract renewal process for free early education serving over 300 children. The district fears that the closure of the Seattle regional office will postpone contract reviews for the upcoming school year—potentially jeopardizing next year’s program. Union-Bulletin

- ➤ Wild turkey numbers have rebounded from near extinction through conservation laws—beginning in the Great Depression—and natural habitat changes that helped them thrive on the Palouse. - ➤ The Northwest Inter-Agency Coordination Center said that Eastern Oregon and nearly all of Washington will face above average wildfire risk by July—this risk follows Oregon’s record 2023 fire season, which burned nearly 2 million acres, cost over $350 million and damaged almost 200 homes.
