COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bree Black Horse, a member of the Seminole nation, spoke at the Walla Walla YWCA’s 26th annual leadership luncheon at Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center on April 30. She called for unity to address longstanding inequities and violence against Indigenous women and girls — she also noted systemic barriers and outlined upcoming advocacy events.  Union-Bulletin
  • On May 1, about 150 local residents gathered at the Walla Walla Courthouse to protest federal policies they say are harming workers’ rights—union and education leaders urged unity as the march continued to City Hall and back. Organizers from the Walla Walla Activism Network said the event highlighted the need to protect public services and labor laws.  Union-Bulletin

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Corie and Ryan Konen stepped down as owners of the Walla Walla Pasta Factory—an establishment that opened in 2019—and handed the business over to a new owner not yet identified. Today, the restaurant hosts a farewell party on the patio—featuring live music and food at 13 E. Main St.  Union-Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Prescott Schools principal Jeff Foertsch will replace Superintendent Justin Bradford at a board vote on May 22—Bradford resigned to take a job at ESD 123 and will finish on June 30. Foertsch spent 25 years in Prescott and plans to use his local experience to help address the district's financial challenges.  Union-Bulletin
  • Green Park Elementary School students won their second consecutive Battle of the Books championship during the district contest on April 23 at Edison Elementary School—competing against teams from all five schools. Every competitor received a T-shirt, a book and the chance to choose three prizes—support provided by local groups.  Union-Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington is planning to remove several synthetic dyes from packaged foods by 2027, starting with Red Dye #3 used in snacks & baked goods. A bill also targets two additional colorings and six petroleum-based dyes for removal by next year.  KONA
  • Rodney Outlaw, a community organizer and WWCC instructor who founded youth music programs, is running for the central ward City Council seat against real estate agent Jeff Strickler—candidates must file by May 9 after the filing period opens on May 5.  Union-Bulletin
  • Candidates in Walla Walla and Columbia counties must file their declarations for city council, port commission, school board, and other local offices by 5 p.m. Friday, May 9—filing begins at 8 a.m. Monday, May 5 and withdrawals are allowed until 5 p.m. Monday, May 12.  Union-Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health is inviting local nonprofits, healthcare institutions and other eligible organizations to apply for $30,000 to purchase and maintain naloxone vending machines that will increase access to overdose reversal medication; application submissions are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 20—successful applicants will buy the machines by Monday, June 30.  Union-Bulletin
