EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Walla Walla Public Schools announced that four of its schools were honored by the Washington State School Recognition Program for the 2024-24 school year—Green Park Elementary, Pioneer Middle, Prospect Point Elementary, and Sharpstein Elementary—with only 16% of schools statewide earning this honor. - ➤ Akin will close its after-school and summer programs for children in Valle Lindo on Thursday, May 29—families have more than 30 days' notice and can get support through Early Head Start and its resource center services. Union-Bulletin
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Elizabeth Alonso-Barrientos filed her candidacy for Walla Walla School Board Position 2 with the county elections office on May 6 — she is a first-time candidate and the only filing for that seat so far. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello said that Lions Park is nearly finished and will open by May 29 with a fishing derby for young anglers and a farmers market featuring over 35 vendors along the park’s pathway—future construction will improve sidewalks and build a new community center next year. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ On Monday, the Justice Department announced that it had opened a civil rights investigation into a Washington law signed three days ago by Gov. Ferguson that requires religious leaders to report child abuse disclosed during confession—an inquiry that will examine whether the mandate infringes on the First Amendment. The probe is set to review if forcing clergy to forgo confessional privilege violates constitutional rights. KONA
- ➤ U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner will meet privately with leadership from the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center and the Army Corps of Engineers on Friday, May 9 — his meetings are aimed at building local ties — and he will also tour Walla Walla High School to speak with district board members, faculty and student leaders.
