Blue Mountain Action Council began its Friends of the BMAC Food Bank program on May 5 to help fund local food services after federal funding cuts closed its mobile pantry—community members can donate monthly amounts from $5 to $100 to meet a $20,000 monthly goal.

In just 16 days the program raised over $118,000 to support key services like the Backpack Bridge program for students.

A 21-year-old man from College Place was charged with first-degree animal cruelty on May 18 after a resident reported a foul smell and barking dogs and officers found a very dirty apartment with dead animals as he tried to run a taxidermy business—another suspect was released for lack of evidence and may still face charges, with his arraignment set for June 2.

On May 21, Waitsburg City Council approved an ordinance that uses parts of Walla Walla County's code to require more open fenced area for raising large animals like cows, horses, llamas, sheep, and goats.

The new ordinance gives residents a six-month grace period and permits conditional use (exempting animals used for fairs, medical care, or short-term family growth) before full enforcement begins.
