CULTURE NEWS

  • The free, family-friendly Walla Walla Pride Festival returns this June by moving downtown to Heritage Square for its sixth year. Scheduled for Saturday, June 7, the event will feature over 50 vendors, performances by drag queens and dancers, and an after party at El Corazon Winery after 5 p.m.—organizers expect the new location will boost downtown activity.  Union-Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Walla Walla Community College will honor 26 graduating Honors Program students with a symposium on June 5 that features their final projects and awards at the WWCC Water and Environmental Center — a reception starts at 3:30 p.m. before the main event at 4 p.m.  Union-Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington residents can buy a new Smokey Bear license plate on November 1 to support wildfire prevention—this special plate funds DNR programs aimed at reducing human-caused fires. The $40 fee at purchase and $30 renewal fee will help support fire safety efforts across the state.  KONA
  • Governor Bob Ferguson vetoed a bipartisan bill aimed at studying housing costs in Washington, a decision that disappointed supporters including Rep. Mark Klicker (R-Walla Walla). The study, estimated to cost ($234,000) over two years, would have gathered input from contractors, landlords and tenants.  KONA
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a law limiting parental access to students’ mental health records—critics warn the restrictions could hurt enrollment—and schools may face up to 20% in state funding cuts if they do not follow the new rules.  KONA
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a law that lets striking workers access unemployment benefits after 15 days—up to six weeks of aid—and small business leaders worry the law may lead to longer strikes while labor groups argue it helps workers secure fair pay.  KONA
