COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Walla Walla Valley will host a busy weekend of events—Music & Crash Fest will begin Friday, May 30 at 6 p.m. at the County Fairgrounds with demo derbies and live performances continuing through Sunday. On Saturday, May 31, the Putt Putt Pour mini-golf tournament starts downtown at 11 a.m.—the Dragon’s Gate Renaissance Faire runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dragon’s Gate Brewery, and Monday, June 2 will feature baseball food truck night at Burwood Brewing.  Union-Bulletin

CRIME NEWS

  • The trial of Brandon O’Neel, accused of shooting a state trooper on Sept. 22, 2022, is rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 8 to allow for a legal sanity assessment and extra preparation by county prosecutor Gabe Acosta—Walla Walla County Judge Brandon L. Johnson set the date due to late August scheduling conflicts.  Union-Bulletin

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On May 22, the port approved a grant application to upgrade utility coordination at Wallula Gap Business Park and Dodd Road Industrial Park to support future tenants like Rockwool. Economic development director Jay Hester said the funding would free up cash in the port’s budget and allow flexible spending—helping consolidate electric, gas, sewer, water and communication services.  Union-Bulletin

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At a City Council workshop on May 27, Forest Service officials detailed that the Tiger-Mill project will log 351 acres, thin 2,562 acres, and analyze 16,262 acres for prescribed fire in the Mill Creek Watershed to help control wildfires. Council members raised questions about water monitoring and contractor oversight — concerns that followed public objections over the project’s potential impact on the watershed.  Union-Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Mark Klicker from Walla Walla said he was upset after Gov. Bob Ferguson vetoed his bill aimed at studying homeownership and rental housing costs—he noted the measure had 25 cosponsors and passed widely before the veto on May 20th. Klicker said he plans to meet with legislative leaders to discuss overriding the veto in the next session.  Union-Bulletin
  • Mayor Mike Dowd said a law enforcement investigation into bookkeeping errors from the former city recorder, who worked from April to September 2024, is unlikely to lead to criminal charges—no money was stolen and the errors have been fixed by current staff. The inquiry follows internal actions that have reconciled disputed invoices and confirmed the city's sound budget.  Union-Bulletin
