COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Since January, a pilot program let library cardholders receive free reciprocal cards from other local libraries to expand access. Walla Walla Public Library had issued 397 cards by June 10, and other systems also participated while the program runs until April 30. Union-Bulletin
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Young actors can audition for summer productions at The Little Theatre of Walla Walla. Rising students in first through twelfth grades will try out for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves on June 16 from 10 a.m. until noon (with performances on June 21 at 3 and 5:30 p.m.), first through sixth graders will audition for Fireside Fairytales on June 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. (with performances on July 12 at 3 and 5 p.m.) and seventh through twelfth graders will audition for Treachery at Cartilage Creek on July 23 at 10 a.m. with shows on Aug. 8 and 9. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Walla Walla Public Schools added 15 new electric buses to its fleet on June 9, making the district now have the largest electric school bus fleet in Washington. Six of the new buses have wheelchair lifts and the buses, funded by a $1 million Department of Ecology grant and a $3.7 million EPA grant, each save about $4,000 a year in operating costs. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ At a meeting on June 3, healthcare leaders warned that new laws raising taxes and setting price limits could increase costs and force hospitals to cut services or close. They said many hospitals already face financial trouble and fear that added changes will reduce access to care. KONA
- ➤ Walla Walla doctor Daniel Varnell had his medical license suspended by the Washington Medical Commission after reports showed he appeared under the influence at work—he was terminated from his locum tenens job following a safety check that found alcohol and pills in his hotel room, and his case remains under investigation.
