  • Sherwood Trust awarded over $1.2M in grants to 13 local nonprofits to support housing, early education and free legal aid for low-income immigrants—over $181,000 went to the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project partnering with the Walla Walla Valley Immigrant Rights Coalition—while efforts continue amid new travel bans and increased ICE enforcement.  Union-Bulletin

  • A large crowd watched Aaron Lewis and the Stateliners perform at Wine Country Amphitheater on Friday, June 13— the show took place against a golden sunset— and the concert left local fans impressed with the live music.  Union-Bulletin

  • Washington state's June 4 carbon auction generated $322 million from allowance sales at $58.51 each—fueling local debate as critics allege the cap-and-trade program is raising gas prices while state officials maintain there is no clear link between auction proceeds and fuel costs.  KONA

  • Edith Martinez works at College Place High School as a Pathway specialist and was named Educator of the Year by Washington State United Latin American Citizens in May.   • The Vansycle Fire near Touchet started on June 12 and burned 2,027 acres before being 100% contained on June 14—local fire crews now oversee the area with Hatch Grade Road reopened and no structures damaged.  Union-Bulletin

  • The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office reminded residents to follow legal fireworks sale and use times ahead of the 4th of July and to check local fire restrictions (the office can be reached at 360-596-3904). The rules set specific sales and discharge hours on June 28, June 29–July 3, July 4, and July 5 to ensure safe celebrations.  KONA
