- ➤ On Friday, June 20, hundreds of people held a memorial on U.S. 12 and outside a westside home in Walla Walla to honor Navy veteran Robert Ellis DeWayne Jr, who died on May 28 from a hit-and-run crash while riding his motorcycle—family, motorcyclists, and emergency workers joined a motorcade from Tri-Cities. - ➤ Three Columbia County groups were awarded community-improvement grants from the Innovia Foundation today—Friends of the Dayton Community Pool received $13,000 for swim lessons, the Columbia County Rural Library District got $10,000 to update the library's juvenile nonfiction section, and Project Timothy was given $7,000 to assist vulnerable residents. - ➤ The 10th annual Pacific Northwest Wine Competition in Walla Walla has a record 166 entries and will see 11 judges taste about 731 wines from Washington, Oregon and Idaho from Monday, June 23 to Wednesday, June 25 — the results will be announced on June 30. Led by volunteers from the Whatcom Beer & Wine Foundation, the event donates all proceeds to support local groups including Walla Walla Community College’s enology and viticulture program, SOS Health Services and the Alzheimer’s Association. - ➤ Washington passed Senate Bill 5813, which raised the capital gains tax to 9.9% on profits over $1 million for long-term asset sales—taking effect retroactively from January 1.
