Between July 1 and 4, the Walla Walla Fire Department fought 10 fireworks-related fires that caused $33,300 in damage and spent $3,800 on overtime to add staffing that helped keep fires away from homes — with most damage limited to shrubbery, a shop, or a garage.

Whitman College President Sarah Bolton said a $3 million budget shortfall led to layoffs, salary cuts, and paused campus projects but will not affect student tuition or scholarships.

The shortfall came from lower tuition revenue, increased scholarship spending, and changes to visa rules that reduced international enrollment—cost-saving measures include keeping some major projects funded by donations and bonds while reducing other expenses.

The city is seeking volunteers for one Lodging Tax Advisory Committee seat and two Water and Wastewater Advisory Committee seats—terms begin immediately and expire on Dec.

31, 2028. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and contact the city clerk for more details.
