Good morning, Walla Walla.
🎓 Education
Starting this fall, Waitsburg School District will charge secondary students for meals unless they qualify while elementary students continue to receive free meals.
The change comes after state budget cuts to education & rising costs forced the district to adjust its meal policy.
State education leaders are proposing an overhaul to high school graduation requirements by emphasizing a default Algebra II course and expanded electives aligned with future postsecondary plans.
The board will vote on the framework in August, and the changes could take effect for the class of 2031 (pending legislative review).
🌲 Environment
Local crews are managing wildfires as the Paradise Fire stays near 590 acres in the Mill Creek Watershed southeast of town and the Hagen Fire has reached 7,419 acres southwest of Tollgate with expanded evacuations — firefighters deploy heavy equipment and helicopters to protect homes.
