GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Candidates for City Council Positions 1, 2 and 3 met on Sept. 9 at the Walla Walla Public Schools Administration Office to share their views on housing—jobs were also a key focus—and to ask for support through votes, endorsements, and volunteer help. They presented their qualifications and specific plans as part of the first election forum of the season. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ At a meeting on September 9, Port of Columbia commissioners debated rejecting the sale of the 37-mile railroad to Paul Didelius—whose offer of $305,000 to $705,000 fell far short of a $13.7-million appraisal—in favor of a new lease since Didelius said he will stop running the line if he cannot buy it. Commissioner Watts said the discussion remains open with a meeting planned with Didelius’s team while Commissioner Bryan, who leaves in December, argued that all details must be weighed to keep shippers like Seneca Foods and Northwest Grain Growers served.
