- ➤ Walla Walla will hold Adam West Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Kirkman House Museum (214 N. Colville St) with a vendor market, scavenger hunt, and vehicle displays including the Batmobile, while the Bat signal will be lit at 8 p.m. outside the Marcus Whitman Hotel's west parking lot. Local organizers honor Adam West's legacy as a hometown hero and inspire community service through the celebration. Union-Bulletin
- ➤ Local volunteers restored the weather-beaten Marcus Whitman Sawmill sign on Mill Creek Road—assisted by the Walla Walla 2020 Historic Sites and Markers Project and a Whitman College staff member. The marker now tells the story of the first sawmill built between the Cascades and Rockies and highlights an important part of our local history. Union-Bulletin
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students and alumni from Dayton, Waitsburg and Prescott High Schools work harvest for Deb Fortner by operating combines, trucks and bankout wagons. Sage Kilts (who began at age 16 and advanced from wagon driver to combine operator) studies architecture at Montana State University and plans to return to work for the Fortners after graduation. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State lawmakers enacted Senate Bill 5357 to raise the assumed return rate for Washington’s pension investments to 7.25%, which lowered required contributions but raised warnings that the system may face a funding shortfall by 2027—experts stress that continued contributions are needed to secure future benefits. - ➤ County health officials reported a rise in unpermitted temporary food vendors who often work late at night in parking lots or at events.
