COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City officials, Tri-County Partners Habitat for Humanity and the Sherwood Trust broke ground on Friday, Sept. 19 at 425 Peyton Lane for an affordable housing project that will create seven townhomes for about 40 residents. The project received a $200,000 grant and state funding for water main upgrades — it is expected to finish in two to three years.  Union-Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kennewick School District dropped its empty routes from 18 seven years ago to only two now and expects nine new drivers to complete training by the end of October—Walla Walla Public Schools remains fully staffed with 50 drivers by hiring retired workers via word-of-mouth.  Apple Valley News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • California extended its cap-and-trade program on September 13th while Washington closed its comment period on new rules to support linking its carbon market with California and Quebec—steps that align their timelines and goals. Washington plans to finalize the linkage agreement in 2026 or 2027 to lower compliance costs and boost clean energy investments.  KONA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Licensing is offering a 988 Lifeline emblem for $18 on all license plates during National Suicide Prevention Month — proceeds support the Veteran and Military Member Suicide Prevention Account. Residents can purchase the emblem through the department’s website.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs refused to provide the DOJ with the voter registration database when a letter on Sept. 8 requested sensitive personal information—The Office said it acted under state law to protect voter privacy and is reviewing the legal basis for the request amid a dispute over state and federal authority.  KONA

  • Costco is recalling Kirkland's Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke sold in clear plastic clamshells after green onions were linked to a listeria risk—customers are asked to return the product for a refund.  KONA
