Good morning, Walla Walla. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 19th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The stolen headstone for Rebecca Owens Gwinn was returned to Stubblefield Cemetery on Oct. 2 after decades of travel from a UW frat house to a Seattle houseboat — her descendant Michael T. Gwinn delivered it. Volunteers then placed the nearly 100-pound marble stone against a rock wall enclosure on the cemetery grounds.  Union-Bulletin
  • Team Chamber will host Reel Impact: The Film WWV Summit on Oct 22 to bring together local filmmakers, government officials and educators to boost film production in the Valley— the event is part of a 10-year plan for local growth. The Chamber will also hold its Annual Community Excellence Awards in December with nominations open through Nov 13 to honor those who improve life in our community.  Union-Bulletin
  • Vital Wines launched a 'Hats for Harvest' campaign on Sept. 20 to gather new sun hats for vineyard workers who had been using worn-out gear. The nonprofit accepts donations at its downtown location or via its Amazon wishlist (ideal hats are made of natural fibers covering ears and neck) and will also seek gloves, hand warmers and beanies as the weather cools (items may be held until next summer).  Union-Bulletin

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owner Jeannie Balmer said H&H Sports & Loan will close by the end of the year as she retires and puts the old Keylor Grand Building on sale for $1 million. Built in 1905 and once the Paramount Theater, the building still shows original storage and show features—inviting creative buyers.  Union-Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • After 20 years of planning and volunteer work, Athena’s historic Gem Theatre will reopen and host a screening of the 1920s silent film City Girl — complete with a live score by a chamber group from the East Oregon Symphony. Project manager Rob McIntyre and over 400 volunteers restored the theater’s 1920s style venue that closed during the Depression, and it is set to become a new space for community events.  Union-Bulletin
