- ➤ Walla Walla Public Schools officials say a state budget shortfall and a cap on special education funds may force the district to cut support for key programs like special education, transportation and operating costs. They explained that while the next two years offer $309.6 million for special education, rising expenses and a $4.4 million gap mean staff and services could be reduced—raising worries about keeping schools running well. - ➤ University of Washington researchers published findings on May 7 that show no evidence of the feared megasplay fault on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which may lead to changes in tsunami models for a potential Big One + officials plan to use the updated science to adjust disaster response plans in the Pacific Northwest. - ➤ Residents in Walla Walla are urged this week during National Mailbox Improvement Week from May 18th to May 24th & owners are advised to repair loose hinges, repaint rusted boxes, or remount posts to keep mail safe. Acting Postmaster Doug Tulino said a well-kept mailbox helps each package reach its proper destination. KONA
- ➤ Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new law last Saturday that raises litter fines from $103 to $256 and delays the requirement for retailers to sell thicker plastic bags until 2028. The law also imposes a 4 cent penalty per bag sold before 2028 (the fee will fund waste reduction initiatives) and takes effect in late July. Union-Bulletin
