Walla Walla asks for your input on an all-way stop at Chestnut and Third

Chestnut carries more cars, and waits would shift on both streets

If you drive, walk or bike through Chestnut Street and Third Avenue, the city wants to hear from you. Chestnut has no stop signs at the junction now, and Third has two-way stop control. The city ordered a safety review after 15 crashes were recorded there between 2020 and 2025.

An all-way stop is anticipated to reduce crashes by up to 70% and make crossing safer for pedestrians. Drivers on Chestnut would wait about nine seconds longer at peak hours, while Third Avenue drivers would wait about 10 seconds less.

  • Feedback deadline: Fri., Nov. 13
  • Online form: tinyurl.com/3ktmdaaa
  • Email: nchavre@wallawallawa.gov

The city also looked at removing street parking to improve sight lines for drivers turning from Third. It isn't the preferred option because of the lost neighborhood parking.

The Wrap

Walla Walla's Día de los Muertos festival and parade drew hundreds of families to downtown Walla Walla on Sunday, Nov. 1, for its fourth year. There was live music, traditional Mexican dances, sugar skull decorating, and ofrendas from different community organizations, hosted in a basement by Grandma's Kitchen owner Manuel Perez. Papel picado banners made it look the part.
